Smoothies are a great way of consuming all your favourite fruits and vegetables.

In just a few minutes, you can whizz up the perfect drink that includes your five-a-day and start the morning off the right way.

However, if you’re more of a tea and toast person for breakfast, smoothies will still make the perfect snack that the whole family can enjoy.

Plus, they help you to avoid indulging in a naughty chocolate bar from your unhealthy snack drawer, as smoothies contain a natural sugar fix that will give you the boost of energy needed to see you through to the next meal time.

What’s even better, is that you don’t have to complicate things either; just 5-8 ingredients is all you need, but of course, you can add what you like!

Even though there are endless ways to spin a smoothie, here are 5 of our favourite recipes that you can try at home.

Side note: these recipes serve one person, so multiply the ingredients if you’re making them for others.

1. Green Machine

This smoothie is full of different greens and fruits fully packed with vitamins and nutrients.

Here, the avocado gives the smoothie a smooth, creamy texture whilst the banana adds to its sweetness.

Ingredients:

  • 100ml water
  • 50ml coconut milk
  • Handful of kale
  • ½ avocado
  • 1 banana
  • Chunk of cucumber
  • Squeeze of lemon juice

Method:

  1. Wash, prepare and roughly chop your ingredients
  2. Add them all into a blender and blitz for as long as you reach your desired consistency
  3. Pour and serve!

2. Very Berry

A good fruit smoothie is very refreshing, especially during the warmer months.

In this recipe, a twist of mint adds to its lightness and the oats makes it more filling, making it a substantial substitute for a full breakfast when you’re on-the-go.

Ingredients:

  • 1 apple
  • 30g frozen mixed berries
  • 2 tbsp plain yoghurt
  • 1 tbsp oats
  • 100ml orange juice
  • 1 sprig mint

Method:

  1. Peel and chop the apple, removing its core
  2. Add to your blender, followed by the berries and then the rest of your ingredients
  3. Blitz until your desired consistency, adding more orange juice if it becomes too thick
  4. Pour and serve

3. Strawberry Honey

For a sweet treat, this smoothie will do just the trick!

The best thing is, you only need 3 ingredients and just a 1 step method; it couldn’t be easier!

And, if you feel like mixing it up a little, feel free to add as many different berries as you like.

Ingredients:

  • 450g strawberries
  • 450ml goat’s milk
  • 2 tbsp honey

Method:

  1. Half your strawberries and pop them in the blender, followed by the milk and honey, then blitz until smooth
  2. Pour and enjoy!

4. Pear and Rhubarb

Smoothies do not necessarily have to be made from raw ingredients.

Sometimes, you want intense flavours, and making stewed fruits or cooked-through coulis can achieve this.

That said, rhubarb’s sherbet-y tang compliments sweet pairs like jam does with doughnuts, and makes for a perfect autumnal snack.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp stewed rhubarb. To make stewed rhubarb, simmer 250g of chopped rhubarb with 50g sugar and the zest and juice of an orange for 10 minutes.
  • 1 ripe pear
  • 250ml apple juice
  • 1 lime

Method:

  1. Add your fruits to the blender first and then pour over your apple juice.
  2. Squeeze the juice of the lime, then blitz until smooth
  3. Pour and serve

5. Coconut and Pineapple

A coconut and pineapple smoothie is the best way to get a flavour of the tropical islands without stepping foot on a plane.

With its pina colada like flavour, this mellow, creamy smoothie tastes best in the summer, especially if you use frozen fruit for an ice-cold finish, which will definitely give you holiday vibes!

Ingredients:

  • 1 banana
  • 100ml coconut milk
  • 2 tbsp coconut yoghurt
  • 120g fresh or frozen pineapple

Method:

  1. Peel and chop the banana and add to your blender followed by the pineapple
  2. Then add your yoghurt and milk
  3. Blitz until smooth, adding more milk or water if it becomes too thick
  4. Pour and serve
