Tags - Safety Tips for Using Butane Gas Bottles
Nothing really compares to cooking your dinner outside with a gas BBQ - especially in the summer.
When it comes to gas BBQs, butane gas bottles are the most common fuel to use because of their portability, cost effectiveness and safety.
In addition, they have many other uses such as powering lights, heaters and even a portable shower unit.
Every butane company is required to give customers specific information about the hazards associated with their products, and gas bottles will have the necessary steps to help you use butane safely - so always read these labels before using the gas bottle.
To make you sure you are familiar with how to handle butane gas bottles safely, here are our top 4 tips.
Butane gas bottles should always be stored upright and in a properly ventilated area outside.
In addition, the gas bottle should be stored away from direct sunlight and in a cool space away from other flammable liquids and aerosols.
Remember not to store your gas bottle below ground level.
And always ensure the valves are turned off when not in use.
When transporting your butane gas bottle, ensure it’s carried upright at all times in its storage container.
Keep in mind, when transporting butane gas bottles by car, the bottle should be no heavier than 9kg and only a maximum of two bottles are to be transported per car.
During transit, make sure the gas bottles are kept out of direct sunlight.
As advised, always read the manufacturer's instructions before using a butane gas bottle; when installing it to a stove or heater, ensure this is fixed correctly as per the manufacturer's standards.
Moreover, do not use butane gas indoors or in small, confined spaces.
Sometimes, gas can fail to ignite properly; in this case, turn off the whole supply for a few minutes to let any unburnt gas disperse before trying again.
In the event that it’s windy, take extra caution as the burners can blow out.
If you’re using butane gas for cooking, only use pots that are the correct size - too big and it will cause the heat to be pushed down towards the gas bottle and may cause it to overheat.
Lastly, make sure the valve has been completely shut off before you disconnect it from the appliance.
If you have a butane gas bottle that is refillable, it will need to be re-tested every 10 years.
Of course, you should inspect the valves regularly in between tests to ensure there is no damage or gas leaks and that all connections are tight.
If you are exposed to butane gas, make sure you step into an area where there’s fresh air and immediately run the exposed skin under warm water and always seek medical attention.
Don’t worry, risks are unlikely to happen if you follow the correct safety procedures, so consider these above for best practice when handling butane gas.
